Bradley and I met through mutual friends, notably Cathy, Barbara and Tamara, in our undergraduate years at Rhodes. At the time, Bradley wrote me off as a 'poppie' (probably not far from the truth given my unabashed frivolity and self-professed love of shoes) and I type-cast him as the 'nerdy, quiet guy'. Needless to say, neither of us paid much attention to the other until our Honours year when we ended up eating lunch in the same dining hall. Cathy Irwin, who joined us for lunch in Oriel Dining Hall, noticed our 'friendship' growing and I believe there was some speculation in the Comp Sci labs about our blossoming romance! But B, ever the gentleman, never openly flirted or 'pulled moves' on me. Behind-the-scenes, though he took Cathy into his confidence and plotted his first move ;-) Early in March 2004, Bradley summoned up the courage to invite me to a Seven Fountains Digital Dinner, where I met both his parents (quite a first date!). After the dinner, he politely escorted me to my door, where he thanked me for a lovely evening and then left. I thought I'd either misread his intentions or that he was too shy to initiate anything. It turned out that I was wrong on both scores - B was merely biding his time and being chivalrous. A few weeks later, a group of us drove to Port Elizabeth to see Counting Crows live. B and I spent the concert together and, the rest, as they say, is history. Counting Crows Holiday in Spain will always be our special song. Five years and many Jhb-PE flights and long-distance calls later, we're still together. The two years we spent apart (me in Grahamstown, lecturing at Rhodes and B in Jozi, working as a software developer) confirmed for us that we want to spend the rest of our lives together. In July 2008, at a beautiful thermal cave in Lake Taupo, New Zealand, B proposed and I, overwhelmed by emotion, said 'yes' through a veil of tears. At the end of last year, I packed up my belongings, said goodbye to Rhodes and moved to Jo'burg. We're finally in the same city, building a home together and still revelling in the seemingly small joy of seeing each other every day. We're excited to start this new chapter of our lives together and thank you all for your wishes and belief in us. We look forward to seeing you on the 26th of September! |
